Zverev Dominates in French Open Opener

He was joined in the sublime department by the acrobatic German Alexander Zverev, the world number three. On Tuesday, he cruised to victory in the first round at the French Open. On the famed Suzanne Lenglen court, Zverev showed what he’s capable of in his first round breakout against 16-year-old American Learner Tien. He ended up winning in a rout, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Off the court, Zverev displays prodigious talent. He’s still very much on a mission for that Grand Slam glory, which has otherwise eluded him throughout his career.

The final, played on the same Parisian courts where Zverev later reached the men’s final, had featured the Nakamura three-seed upset by fighters in August. He further asserted his dominance over Tien by breaking his serve once in each set, dictating the tempo throughout the match. Tien, now ranked 67th in the world, had successfully defeated Zverev before in their only other meeting. The German star used his recent experience to help him remain calm and cool in this affair.

Acceptance of His Place

Zverev admitted it’s not easy being one of the few top players on the men’s tour. He wanted to see the inconsistency side by side with GOATs (greatests of all time) such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

“This is who I am, unfortunately. I have up-and-downs. I’m not a Novak Djokovic, I’m not a Rafa Nadal who is going to win or make finals of every tournament.”

His philosophical acceptance of his position within the sport’s hierarchy reflects a maturity that may benefit him as he progresses through the tournament.

Zverev remarked on his highs and lows:

“My highs are very high, and I realised that, but my lows are lower than other players and other top guys. I have come to terms with that, as well. That’s just how my tennis is. You know, that’s maybe who I am, in a way.”

This acceptance has sharpened his focus. This time around, he seems mentally prepared to overcome any obstacles and hurdles to capture that elusive Grand Slam title.

Looking Ahead

With this victory behind him, Zverev is ready to make big waves. He is now looking ahead to his next opponent, Jesper De Jong of the Netherlands. Zverev said he felt positive about the way he was playing and would look to extend his winning momentum through the tournament.

“I’m just hoping that my highs will be higher than anyone else’s the next two weeks.”

Zverev’s confidence showed in his satisfaction with a straight-set win in his opening match:

“I’m happy with the three-set win, usually it’s more four or five sets in first matches. Hopefully, it will continue like this and it will be a fun two weeks here.”

As he prepares for the quarterfinals, Zverev wants to ensure that he continues the highest level of play. He keeps himself humble and pragmatic about his road in tennis.
