US President Donald Trump linked criticism of Norway to his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan. Speaking about immigration, he said he wanted no immigrants from Norway and described the country as one that “sucks”.

Trump contrasted his opposition to Norwegian immigration with support for people coming to the United States from Denmark. He also spoke against immigration from Somalia. His remarks connected his stance on Norway directly to not receiving the prize.

The Oslo-based Nobel committee chose Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado in 2025 and South African jurist Navi Pillay in 2026. Pillay received the award for work promoting peace and international law. Trump has claimed to have resolved at least eight conflicts in his second term.

Machado gave Trump her medal at a White House meeting in January 2026. During the rally, he thanked her for the gesture and said he would not forget it.
