Credit institutions headquartered in the EU held total assets of €34.99 trillion in June 2026, an increase of 5.18 per cent from €33.27 trillion a year earlier, the European Central Bank (ECB) said in banking figures published on 6 November 2026.

The institutions’ aggregate non-performing loans ratio rose by 0.03 percentage points over the same period, reaching 1.99 per cent. This measure compares non-performing loans with total loans, including central bank cash balances and other demand deposits.

Aggregate return on equity stood at 5.31 per cent. The profitability measure uses profit or loss for the first six months of 2026 and is not annualised. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio, which measures that capital against total risk exposure, was 16.43 per cent.

The quarterly dataset covers 336 banking groups and 2,283 stand-alone credit institutions and non-EU-controlled subsidiaries and branches operating in the EU. Together, they represent nearly 100 per cent of the EU banking sector’s balance sheet. The figures are consolidated at group level and cover areas including profitability, funding, asset quality and capital adequacy.

The ECB also revised some earlier figures. Most reporting institutions use international accounting and supervisory reporting standards, although some small and medium-sized institutions may use national accounting standards.
