Estonian laser communications company Golbriak Space has raised €4 million to move its technology towards industrial-scale manufacturing and increase production capacity. The financing comes as the company negotiates commercial programmes covering several thousand terminals.

The investment went into Iribits S.r.l., Golbriak Space's holding company in Italy, to support development and industrialisation at its Estonian operating subsidiary, Golbriak Space OÜ. Join Capital and PhotonVentures jointly led the seed financing, alongside participant Takeoff, an accelerator managed by Plug and Play within the CDP Venture Capital National Accelerator Network.

Golbriak develops and manufactures laser communications equipment for spacecraft and airborne platforms. It is expanding output of ERMESAI+ for space use and ARES for airborne applications. The company says the two product families share a software-defined architecture intended to simplify integration and operation across different platforms and networks.

According to Golbriak, its terminals rely less on the host platform's pointing capabilities, making integration easier and enabling several terminals to work on one spacecraft or aircraft. The company develops the optical, electronic, mechanical and software components internally.

Founder and CEO Nicola Garzaniti said Golbriak has working products and paying customers. The company says negotiations are advanced for programmes collectively involving several thousand systems. It expects customer-funded deployments across multiple commercial space programmes to widen its operational footprint from 2027, while it prepares further ARES systems for airborne use.
