Organisers expect around 50,000 people to visit the annual pumpkin festival at Groot-Bijgaarden castle near Brussels this year. The Belgian event combines autumn harvest displays with carving activities ahead of Halloween.

Pumpkins brought in from Belgium, Portugal and Germany vary in size and shape, with a 772-kilogram specimen among those on show. Some of the larger ones have also been made into improvised kayaks.

Families and pumpkin enthusiasts are attending despite a hot summer that made the harvest difficult. Alongside viewing the displays, visitors can take part in pumpkin carving.
