Giunti Editore has published Cats of Pompeii in partnership with the Pompeii Archaeological Park, focusing on the feline colony that lives within the archaeological site. The book follows the animals’ daily lives through photographs of them exploring Roman streets, gardens and houses.

Archaeologist and photographer Silvia Vacca donated the pictures to the park. They include scenes captured during quieter periods at the UNESCO World Heritage site, where visiting tourists regularly photograph the cats.

Between 40 and 50 cats live in the park. Its monitoring arrangements are intended to protect their welfare while also safeguarding the ruins and visitors. Video surveillance has also been introduced to help prevent people from abandoning animals there.

The park works with Archeogatti Onlus, a charity chaired by Antonella Carotenuto, on sterilisation, health checks, feeding and efforts to prevent abandonment. The partnership also arranges adoptions for some cats. The book is available from shops within the park and through Giunti’s distribution network.
