Airbnb is introducing optional insurance that compensates eligible travellers when rain during their stay reaches specified thresholds. The company says guests can purchase the weather cover as part of their booking, with Chubb underwriting the policy.

The option is available to residents of Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden. It covers travel at home and abroad, though not all destination countries are included.

Daily compensation ranges from €50 to €1,000. To qualify, rainfall at the accommodation’s location must reach at least 1.5 mm within an hour during the period from 8 am to 8 pm, for a minimum number of hours specified in the policy. Both the required duration and the payout differ by country.

Rainfall is monitored automatically using data from organisations including NASA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Guests do not have to provide evidence of the weather themselves and will receive a notification if they are eligible to claim.
