Readers of Condé Nast Traveller have chosen Porto as the friendliest European city in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2026. The Portuguese city ranked first in a category focused on hospitality and the welcome visitors receive from local residents.

The vote considers residents’ willingness to assist travellers, including those who need help understanding restaurant menus or navigating public transport. The magazine linked Porto’s recognition to its growing popularity for short breaks centred on food and culture.

Portugal also claimed the runner-up position through Lisbon. Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Stockholm in Sweden and Valletta in Malta filled the remaining places in the European top five.
