Council influencer scheme draws no invitees for October EU summit
Six EU diplomats said their countries had nominated nobody, with some citing practical obstacles or a lack of interest.

No influencers have been invited under a Council outreach initiative to the European Council meeting scheduled for 15 and 16 October 2026. Council spokesperson Romain Sadet confirmed that the summit would take place without content creators participating.
The initiative envisaged invitations to social media personalities for summits in Brussels and selected ministerial meetings, aiming to introduce Council activities to new audiences. Responsibility for choosing participants and issuing invitations rested with EU member countries.
Six EU diplomats said their governments had proposed no candidates. One blamed logistical obstacles and budget limits. Another said the matter had not been discussed with their capital, while leaving open participation at future summits. A third saw little interest and argued that leaders could bring influencers without Council involvement.
The proposed access arrangements would allow creators into some spaces reserved for journalists with EU accreditation, but not permit them to question leaders or ministers. A Council official said staff would accompany participants throughout, that they would have no media status and that the envisaged maximum was about 10 creators for each event.
Guidance circulated to national governments in June advised against candidates whose published views opposed EU values. It also discouraged significant or longstanding commercial partnerships to avoid links with large brands. The scheme would not pay participants.
The International Press Association, representing reporters covering European institutions, criticised the plan. It said influencers would face no requirement to disclose who paid them, whereas journalists accredited by EU institutions were expected not to take payment for favourable reporting.
